Why Measure Iron Concentrations in the Steam Cycle?

Iron corrosion leads to thinning of steel piping and equipment used in the power plant steam cycle. This unbound iron can deposit on surfaces throughout other points of the plant and lead to further corrosion, thinning and equipment failure. This leads to safety, cost and productivity concerns throughout the plant. It is essential that power generators have a reliable corrosion monitoring method that provides accurate and timely analysis to make informed decisions about the treatment and disposition of process streams. Real-Time Surrogate Monitoring

The process waters used in power generation are very pure, so it can be assumed that almost all particles present are due to corrosion. Iron transport as iron oxides has been successfully monitored in real time by a surrogate technique using particle monitoring and turbidimetry instruments such, as Hach’s TU5400 turbidimeter.

When used in tandem with the DR3900 spectrophotometer’s colorimetric total iron lab procedure, a correlation between iron and the online turbidity measurements can be made. This surrogate method allows the operator to be alerted to spikes in iron concentration and make informed decisions in real-time.

NEW- Low Level of Detection Film Forming Amines

Hach's Film Forming Amines kit allows you to test ODA, OLA and OLDA based film forming amines products using Hach's DR3900 and DR6000 spectrophotometers. Film Forming Amines are expensive and overdosing can lead to more than just higher costs. Overdosing can lead to the difficulty of "gunk balls" in your system. Under dosing can lead to corrosion of your systems. Test for Film Forming Amines at lower concentrations with greater accuracy to ensure your steam cycle systems are adequately protected, costs are kept in check and overdosing risks are mitigated.
